ABOUT
For The Win (FTW) is an action-packed battle royale featuring fast-paced FPS gameplay and thrilling gacha rewards. As a UX/UI designer on this project, I was responsible for designing the Kill Announcement Banner and Damage Indicator, ensuring it delivered instant, impactful feedback to players during combat.
OVERVIEW
Background
For The Win (FTW) is a mobile shooting game designed for the smartphone gaming experience, where players use their fingers to engage in combat and eliminate enemies. My role as a UI/UX designer involved:
  • Working closely with the lead designer to collaborate on the end-to-end design process of the new features (kill announcements and damage indicators)
  • Evaluating competitors and their designs to craft a point-of-view of how and why they designed their respective banners and announcements in their style
  • Creating visual designs for in-game damage indicators and banners for kill/multi-kill announcements
Problems
Solution
Using the existing visual design language of the game, we designed callouts and visuals that were more rewarding to look at, improving overall visibility and organized other existing elements to better fit the style of the game. I was able to create:
  • Designs for different kill announcements, conveying a feeling of escalating excitement
  • Designs for a damage indicator to effectively showcase to the player that the enemy has been damaged
RESEARCH
To better understand the game’s concepts and design language, I sought to understand both the gameplay and the visual design language. The theme and vibe were futuristic, sci-fi, and friendly. I thoroughly examined their design and researched similar styles in the market for insights and inspiration, diving into the logic of why they choose to go with their designs.

Conclusion [my learning & insights]

Early on, it became clear to me that my grasp of the game's thematic and visual communication styles wasn't as thorough as it should’ve been. Initially, my focus was more on the structural aspects of design rather than ensuring thematic consistency. I had done market research and my findings and insights were well received by my stakeholders. However, incorporating a new design style into the game required working through the intricacies.

This journey highlighted the importance of leveraging existing visual languages, both to prevent player confusion and to deepen immersion. Emphasizing attention to detail proved critical, as it enhanced the overall quality and coherence of the game's world. Ensuring that the design of kill announcements matched the game's sci-fi and approachable theme was essential not only for visual harmony but also for amplifying the existing gameplay experience.

Moving forward, I will prioritize these elements in my design approach, ensuring that every aspect of the UI contributes to the game's overall narrative and player immersion. I’m proud to note that my designs are currently live in the game and you can join over 100,000+ players by downloading FTW on the Google Play Store.
